Back by popular demand...Fake Bake Month! (Maybe we should call it the Summer of Faux Tan?
I had never heard of Famous Dave's tanner until I posted asking for suggestions of tanners to review. When several readers suggested it, my first thought was that someone was trying to play a trick on me. The only Famous Dave's I knew was barbecue sauce!

But alas, there is a Famous Dave's tanner, and I made quick work of ordering a bottle. Famous Dave's prides itself on having the truest color, lowest odor, and smoothest application. Tall order, eh?

The lotion is indeed fragrance-free (Dave says added fragrances intensify DHA reek), but I did detect a bit of that telltale "health food store unscented lotion" odor in it. Know what I mean? It's hard to describe, but it just had that raw smell. I didn't mind, because within a few minutes, it had evaporated. After a few hours, I did smell the DHA but, as promised, it wasn't nearly as foul as some of the more heavily-scented offerings.

As for application, the lotion is a bit opaque, so it requires a good bit of effort to get it completely rubbed in. This is a GOOD thing, as it forces you to evenly distribute the product on your skin. The opacity makes up for the lack of tint, which would otherwise serve as a guideline for where you've applied the product.

Once it's dry, you've seen the last of it. Famous Dave's didn't come off on my clothes or sheets, or sweat off into a gooey mess (it was rather hot the day I first tried it).

A few hours after application, a VERY believable tan develops. It's even and golden - not orange at all (see the information about how pH contributes to the orange tint, on the Famous Dave's website). It loses just one point because it wasn't as dark as I was hoping for. I was able to achieve a darker tan with a second application two days later. And honestly, since Famous Dave's is pretty much fuss-free, I didn't mind.

Overall, this is a perfect choice if you're sensitive to fragrances and/or can't stand the messiness of other tanners. I'm surprised it hasn't been featured in more magazines, although I'm guessing the problem is ad dollars rather than product effectiveness!

As a fitness model and competitor I need to have a tanned complexion year. To find a tanning method that won't harm my skin and looks natural is like looking for a needle in a haystack. I finally found the only self-tanner I will use that hydrates my skin and gives me the most sun-kissed golden brown skin.

I used to think the only way to get a golden, natural looking tan was to use the tanning bed. The harmful rays were taking their toll on my skin so I had to stop. I tried Mystic Tan, which was not natural looking and was uneven. Drugstore brands were even worse and smelled awful! I applied them daily and still didn't achieve a tanned look that I was happy with - I was throwing money out the window.

Someone suggested Famous Dave's Tanner. I thought I had nothing to lose so I ordered some. I was relieved that it was fragrance-free and that it applied evenly. That day I noticed a natural looking tan starting to develop. I even applied it to my face, which I couldn't do with other tanning lotions.

I am a disciple of Dave's Tanner now, I won't use anything else!

I just have to add my testimonial. I was highly recommended this product on the Cathe Friedrich forums, along with of a bunch of others, I made the purchase. I am a customer for life. I do tan in the spring here in Michigan but I want to get away from the tanning beds but nothing was working until I received yours yesterday and I applied it last night. Now I had stopped tanning so I could let my color fade. I even wore white to bed to test the rubbing off. I got up this morning and WOW! no color rubbed off and my color was better than coming out of the tanning salon. It is a natural glowing bronze color. I even applied it to my face with a makeup sponge and I have dry/sensitive skin. There was no breakouts, no scrathy feel or itching or heavy feel. It was just like I put my night moisturizer on.

I just wanted to rave on your self tanner!!!! It is fantastic! I have used all kinds of self tanner’s lotions, sprays, etc.- all brands from inexpensive to expensive - this is BY FAR the best!! Finally fantastic color without the work. I got so tired of self tanners with colors guides - great to help get them on but then what?? I had to get an extra set of sheets so as to not ruin my good sheets. I was so sick of it and felt hopeless to never find a great self tanner that did not have a color guide. Well I am so happy to be wrong - your tanner has the best color, goes on like a dream - NO SMELL!!! It is the simplest self tanner I have ever used. I wish I tried it years ago. Now self tanning is no longer a chore! I just bought a travel size one too so that I can bring it with me on vacation!! I will be a life long customer! Thanks Dave!

Hi! I found it hard to believe that a product that claimed to be so great wasn't available everywhere. If it's so fabulous, why not mass market to everyone, everywhere? Well, I am believer!! It took 3 applications to get the darker color I wanted, but when I did my god was I hot!! Absolutely the best self tanner I tried. Just like a lotion, so easy to apply, really has no smell out of the bottle AT ALL. Does get a very mild tanner smell as it develops, but much less noticable than any other brand. Very nice, natural and beautiful color. I will never try another tanner, ever again. Famous Dave, you are a fabulous man. Thank you

Hello Dave. I bought your self tanning lotion a few weeks back and just tried it last night on my arms just so I could see how the product worked me. It’s everything that you and your customers have been saying. I'm in my 40's and been a lover of the tanning booth since I started in my 20's. I realized this year that I needed to stop destroying my skin with the tanning beds I was noticing my skin was getting dyer and the signs of wrinkles were appearing. I saying to myself and stressing wondering what I was going to do to still get that tanned look without the sun or tanning booth. I’ve tried other self tanners is the past and never liked any of them. They all made you look orange and fake and the smell was worse than the results. I was worried I would get the same results with your production, but I was completely wrong and surprised. There is barely a smell at all, only when applying but gone afterwards and you don’t end up smelling yourself all day long like the other products. When I woke up in the morning I could see a natural light brown color and NOT ORANGE! I think I have found my new best friend. I’m looking forward to trying it on my legs. I will buy this product again and tell all my friends about it. Thank you for creating a great product.

I have used Dave's Tanner for about 3 years and I am very happy with it. No odor,streaking or bad coloring. I have a skin disorder(GA) and am very sensitive to some lotions but this has no adverse affect. It also helps hide some of the areas so I am comfortable without sleeves! Thanks so much!

I just want you to know that I LOVE this self tanner. I have used many others including the really expensive ones, and the thing I hate the most is the smell. Famous Dave's has a very low odor. I also love the natural tan look I get from his product. I am a very fair skinned blonde, and always hated the streaky, orange look on my skin, clothes and sheets. I can dress a few minutes after applying Famous Dave's, and not have it wear off on my clothes or furniture. I bought this product on eBay, and can't wait to order more. I just wanted to tell you how much I LOVE your self tanners. I have had 3 pre-melanomas removed, so "sun" tanning is NOT an option. I am very fair and the color of your self tanning lotion is perfect. But the best features are: that it dries quick and is absolutely not sticky & has virtually no smell! Fabulous!!!

I am a return buyer. This will be my fourth order now, this stuff works great. I ran out about two weeks ago and I haven't been using it. My legs look horrible, they are dry and colorless. I have bought several of the moisture tan for my daughter and myself. When I bought her the first bottle of it and she had used it all, she called me and asked me to order her another one. She said that it gave her the most natural tan ever and that she had gotten quite a lot of compliments. She used to be a believer in tanning beds but no more, thank goodness. For myself, I do love the moisture tan but also bought a bottle of the spray tan. I put it in a small spray bottle of my own and now I alternate the two using one then the other every day or so. I love the even look that both of them give me but the spray tan gives me a darker look that looks very natural. Thanks for the great product.

I've been using self tanners for over 20 years. Some work great, some suck. The biggest problem is the "orange glow" most provide. After a week at a t ropical resort with daily applications, my wife finally says, "please don't use any more of the self-tanner, you are orange!"


Now I have found the true solution. The moisture product goes on smooth, and within a few hours I have a BROWN tan, not orange. I have red hair and freckles, but your product blends my skin an evenly bronze color year round. You can darken up as much as you want with repeated applications or you can go light and get a slight tan in a single application. It lasts for about five days (with showering!). It turns skin as dark as you want with repeated and regular applications and even turns lighter features (e.g. moles, nipples, etc) a brown color for a more mainstream and sexy effect. Please keep making this product, it is wonderful!

Hi! I hope this is the place to leave feedback. I have placed a second order with you because I am AMAZED at how well your self tanner works! I am blond and very fair. I used the Dave's Self Tanner and the Moisture Self Tanner this summer. I can't tell you how many people thought I had been away to some far off island on holiday. You can only imagine the look on their faces when I told them it was a self tanner. No orange color, no streaks, no smell. Since the tanning effect was very deep, I am now ordering your product for fair skinned people. Am hoping it will not be too dark, just a nice golden glow for the cooler months ahead. I love your tanner. I can't believe it really doesn't smell! I have a question/suggestion, though. I am travelling to Australia in about a month for 2 weeks and want to take some tanner with me. Can I put some in a travel container or will exposure to air ruin it? Last time I travelled, I put the whole bottle in a ziploc bag but it made a huge mess because I couldn't close the bottle. I just started using your products and to be honest, I am totally blown away. I'm used to waiting around in the buff for 20 mins before even thinking about putting my clothes on after applying other self-tan products, and tend to use them before going to bed because the smell is so terrible. I picked up my first bottle of "Fair skin and face" this morning from the local postal depot on my way to work and out of curiosity, decided to test it out when I got there.

Wearing a suit and WHITE shirt, I popped into the staff toilet, applied your product and amazingly was "good to go" in the time it took to put my shirt back on. AMAZING ....and NO SMELL!! Only one request, as I am VERY fair I wondered if you could sell "2 packs" or "3 packs" bottles of "Fair Skin" at a reduced rate combo on your website like you do with "Moisture Tan". This would save me from ordering them individually as I intend to use this for more than just my face.

I have to say that this is absolutely the best tanning product or lotion for that matter that I have ever tried. I have very sensitive skin and through many years I have wasted alot of money. I was very apprehensive at first to use Dave's Tanner but I read several of the testimonies which are posted and thought "Why not." Much to my surprise I did not break out in a really bad rash like I do with most tanners and lotions that I have tried. This is the absolute best! It says fragrance free and it is which truly surprised me.

At first I thought this product was a little pricey but to tell you the truth it really isn't because I am able to use it. This product I won't just use a time or two then discard the rest. I will use both bottles and then purchase more.

OK thank you ! I appreciate your quick response... I love this stuff... It doesn't have that terrible scent... also it stays on when you get showered. The other stuff I was using would wash off in the shower.. I looked great till the water hit and washed the bronzer off that showed you where you put the lotion. You don't need that if you apply it with care. Thank you so much for such a great product... I will be a life member! I no longer go to the tanning bed.. I can do this at home and get my work done!

Thanks for sending my tanner soooo fast! Wow two days. And, I already went from pale to tan in one one application. Believe me, I have tried them all. I worked in retail for over 20 years(cosmetic manager), so I had many opportunities to try many brands. I have never tried one that I liked so much.The color is natural and my skin feels so smooth. I am on my second bottle of your tanner and I love it.  I actually realized that it made my complexion better, like helped out my mild acne and evened out my skin tone.  I was just wondering if you sell any products that are JUST a moisturizer with no tanner in them.  Because I want the benefits of using your product every day but I don't want to be sooooooo tan! have tried that many Fake tans (as i am a red head with painfully white skin!!) and i love it - I use it everyday mixed with a squirt of aloe vera gel to give a glow after a bath - a little goes such a long way - one squirt does my whole leg. The best bit is the lack of smell..I really recommend this product and am so happy I stumbled across it on the net. Thanks!!

This is my second order for this tanner, I loved it from the first time I tried it and now I don't want to be without it. My Son even thinks it is great and he has always made fun of me in the past for using "fake" tanners.
I have been banned from the sun for the last 9 years ever since I had a melanoma taken off of my leg and I love to have a tan so I have tried just about every sunless tanner out there including the very expensive mist on tan which also made me go a lovely glowing shade of orange. WOW!WOW!WOW!I have been using self tanners for over 17 years and have used EVERY brand on the market. Even brands from Europe and Asia that are not available here in the US. This is the BEST. Ok I have tried EVERYTHING. This stuff doesnt come off on clothes or sheets, doesnt smell, blends well and is not orange. You can use it on your face and body and the color is amazing. I am addicted! It is even better that Mystic Tan or anything like it.

I recommend the scrub and 2 bottles of tanner combo I have not tried the one called Moisture Tan but I have tried the original one called Famous Dave's.

I've actually used Moisture Tan and it is awesome. I never had streaking and I always got compliments on the color. I use to use it 1to2 times a week during the summer and it is awesome to use on your face too. I actually need to order another bottle. Love it!

I just wanted to let you know that I received the tanner today, and have posted feedback!  Thanks so much!  At the moment, I'm about 2 hours into my tan.  Can't wait to see how it works out, but I'm thrilled with the fact that there is virtually no odor.  My husband is a bodybuilder and uses the Jan Tana Fast Tan, and when he applies that I have to stay in the other room because the odor is just so offensive to me.  That's one reason while I'll most likely be a returning customer time and again.

Just got my 2 - 8 ounce bottles of Moisture Tan and wanted to say I'm Impressed!!!  Initially the color was very light so I continued to apply it each day and I love the NATURAL Look!!!!!!  Admittedly, you do have to be more careful how you apply because there is no tint to it, but I Love the color!!!  I was using AU Courant which was costing me twice the money for a 6 oz. bottle and I did not like the way it faded, (however I liked their spray bottle application).  Anyhow, on a personal note, I graduated with a David Gould in 1982 in Fitchburg MA.  Any connection?????  Also, a homeshopping network that I frequently buy from is looking for new products this month to feature on their show.  Your tanning product would be awesome to offer.  The network is called QVC and you can visit them at QVC.com and ask about information to sell your product through them.  I will be ordering again and thank you.

I first bought your product one year ago.............it is the ONLY self tanner I can use on my legs that does not streak them!! I've tried them all, from cheap to very expensive and they all streak my legs, and some turn me green............yours does not do either of these.......I love it!

Just a quick note to tell you how much I like your product. Moisture Tan is everything you claim it is. 
I didn't turn orange, even with three successive applications. Properly applied as per instructions, it really doesn't come off on clothing or towels after a shower.  Finally, it has no odor on application, and a pleasant smell after it develops, unlike the other brands I have tried which leave me and my laundry smelling kinda funky, if you know what I mean!

Hello, just wanted to say thanks- I used 2 coats of the tanner before I left for vacation last week.  I looked super dark and even the whole time without reapplying.  And it is true that this lotion has the lowest odor of any I have tried- and it dries quickly which is nice.  Maybe most importantly- I have had major trouble with the way self tanners fade on my skin.  Usually I look spotty after a few days and end up having to scrub it all off and start over.  But so far the moisture tan seems to be fading naturally and thats a huge plus for me.  I will be ordering more!  Thanks again, Rosemary

Hello again!  I used your product for the first time last evening and am absolutely thrilled with the results!

My daughter and I are blond hair/blue eyed which equals VERY VERY PALE SKIN!  (We truly are professionals in self-tanning!) We never tan in the sun (who would want to with all the skin damage/wrinkles??!) and have tried virtually every product out there - including the MysticTan Booths and the {very expensive} salon spray-on services.  The smell of these products was bad enough but we never were 100% satisfied - a streak here, a dark patch there, uneven color - and the expense (the best we found is $34/bottle) so we are always searching for a better product.

SEARCH NO MORE - WE'VE FOUND IT!!!  I was skeptical but again, willing to try anything but this is truly the best!  My color is so even!  And so natural looking!  And my skin feels great!  There is no "missed area" or "streaked area" - THIS IS FANTASTIC!! 

Here's a helpful hint for everyone for feet and hands:  Do these areas last and mix a drop of moisturizing lotion with the Moisture Tan.  It dilutes it ever so slightly for these tough areas that tend to gather more color and looks great!

I just wanted to know I received the above item yesterday...couldn't wait to give it a 'test run', so I and a couple co-workers applied it to one hand.  Voila, 4 hours later we can see a very noticeable color difference, and NO ORANGE!

Because of this, I have several co-workers who are interested in purchasing, and I have sent your ebay info along to them.

I tried this today, and OMG...it's GREAT!  I have never used a self-tanner before, but I did see lots of orange on others that did!  My son's aesthetician sells a self-tanner for $40, but this was nowhere near that price.  I decided to do some searching and came upon your product on Ebay. 
 
I really hesitated--I really don't want to be orange, but I don't have lots of time to get rid of the ghostly white, so I used it in a very inconspicuous spot--my abdomen--and it completely blended in with the tan I already had!  I can't tell where the suntan ends and the self-tanning begins. 
 
I have another friend and then some and I am positive they will be buying from you too.  Some of them have been using another tanner, but it has that "orange" and it leaves it on clothes and bedsheets.  Wait until they see my tan from this self-tanner. 
 
All I can say is THANK YOU, THANK YOU, and THANK YOU....this beats lying out in the sun getting wrinkled and looking leathery!  I'm almost 50 and the doctors keep telling us  how bad the sun is...now we don't have to worry and we don't have to blind everyone the first time we wear shorts either.  THANKS!

In the sport of bodybuilding, a nice tan is essential. I think I had tried just about every brand out there, but I had problems with my skin breaking out and itching, particularly on my stomach - didn't look good and didn't feel good either.

I found Famous Dave's Tanner just searching the web one day and thought I'd give it a try. That was almost two years ago, and it has never given me any skin problems. The color is very realistic with no streaks, and it's an added benefit that it dries in 5 minutes. Hi! I ordered your tanning lotions, and I recieved them in the mail yesterday. Only two days! Not only am I stunned by the delivery, but this is honestly the best taning product I have EVER used. Growing up, I have always had a very pale complexion. My nickname was actually Snow White as a teenager... in fact, some departmet stores don't even carry a foundation product light enough for my skin. Tanning in the sun has only given me a burn every time. Tanning in the tanning beds would turn my skin red; the cleaner used to wipe down the beds after each use would make my skin, being so sensitive, break out into a rash. Not to mention tanning under the sun or in a taning bed is terrible for your skin. My two best friends recieved Botox injections yesterday. Their both 22. They've laid in tanning beds since their teenage years, and they look over 15 years older. Gorgeous and wealthy, yet they look 40!  My skin is always dry, and I've been the spray tan route. I've been to over 11 ! salons, and I've done the Magic Tan booth twice. Each time my skin would be left blotchy, uneven, and orange. And tanning lotions... I've tried it ALL. I've used all the department store products, and almost every drugstore product. I finally stopped counting after I threw away my 34th bottle and simply gave up. For the past few years I've completely thrown away the idea of having a great tan. In fact, I've never had one of those golden, sought-after tans that you see on all the models every summer. Never. As in, never in my entire life, never. So when I saw your site I was completely skeptical. Actually, I saw it last summer, but I never ordered it until the other day on a whim. I had feelings that it wouldn't work simply because nothing ever has. I used it last night... and it's fantastic! I ACTUALLY have a brilliant tan! I went on my morning run today, and two people asked if I had gone on vacation somewhere! I'm the girl who goes on vacation in South Beach, Miami for two! weeks and comes back the looking like I'd been under and umbrella! So when they said this I was thrilled! I have tried countless self tanners and have experienced countess disasters!
I ordered Moisture Tan and have to say that it is, indeed the most natural color of any self tanner I've used!  If you use gloves it's a virtually foolproof application too!  Nobody should ever expect a self tanner to have no smell at all...I could detect the usual frito-like smell after a couple of hours but I have to say that it was so much less noticeable than anything else I've ever used.

I'm a new customer. I purchased one bottle of your Famous Dave's Self Tanner. I've used Clinique and Estee Lauder self tanners most of my adult life. I'm retired now and I enjoy finding a "deal" on the Internet. WOW! Did I find a deal with your product! Not only is it affordable, less expensive than the department store brands, but it WORKS! It's not orange, just like your site says. It's tan, a lovely tan. I followed the directions to the tee and let me tell you my friend, I'll purchase more and I'm telling my friends!

Hi! I just want to say that I love your tanner and scrub. I do have a question. When I apply the cream it is very milky and I have to rub it in for a while before the white film absorbs...am I using too much product or is this the normal application? I am afraid if I use less I will streak because there is no color guide. This is one of the best self tanners I have used...and I've tried them all...even the most expensive department store and salon ones...in fact they were the worst ones I've used. I thought the more money & reputable names they were, they better they would perform. I am so glad I found your product. I just want hints and info to know if I am applying it properly. Thank you.

I received my tanning lotion and couldn't wait to try it. my arms turned out great nice light tan and my legs have to work on them alittle more I do have a question I've been told if you put a little lotion on your knees and elbows that it won't  clob  up as much and also the next day I had a rash but I am going to continue with it I love it  did you say you also have something for the face or if I keep putting it on my face it will darken? I've recently ordered 2 bottles of Moisture Tan from you and I can't even begin to tell you how many compliments I have received on my Tan. (after only 2 uses!!!)   I would like to buy about 10 bottles (to give to my friens and sisters) and was wondering if you could give me a better price for a large quantity order.  Also, I had such great results w/ moisture tan, I am hesitant to try Famous Daves- are they pretty much the same product?  If so, maybe I can order 9 moisture tans and one Famous Daves to try it out...

Thanks - as I said before, I am really most impressed with your products .
 I am a sun lover, and I live in Cyprus which enjoys a hot  Mediterranean
climate, and although my body goes a natural shade of brown,  my face skin
is very sensitive, and always goes red, which can actually be quite
embarrassing at times - my dermatologist has said I simply need to live with
it. I have tried MANY fake tan lotions on my face before to try to overcome
this, but, they never mask the redness, or, they look orange .
I have now used yours for the last few days, and the colour change is fast
and realistic - I am so pleased, as, it is simple to apply , goes on evenly,
and leaves no smears. I can even put it on just before I go out, and, no-one
would notice apart from commenting what a lovely tan I have.
I do not know yet how long the tan lasts, but, first signs are very
encouraging.I look forward to trying the face scrub as well - that will be interesting. I am, quite happy for you to use this letter as a reference in your adverts if you wish.

I had to tell you how impressed I am with this tanner.  I have been using self tanners for over 10 years and never have I come across a self tanner that not only has no odor, but actually gives me a beautiful tan without streaking, orange color or a dirty muddy look.  I was amazed when I woke up and looked in the mirror, it looked like I had been away on a tropical vacation!!! Great product!!  I live in Ohio and lately we haven't seen the sun very much.  When I received your product (which to my amazement only took a few days to get to me!) I put it on and instantly felt better even though the weather was damp and dreary.  I used it twice and now I have a great golden tan just in time for my anniversary date with my husband today!  I'm normally very pale and I usually only wear self-tanner in the spring/summer months but your tanner went on so smooth and blended so easily I didn't end up with ANY streaks or splotches (which is a first!) so now I want to wear it all year round!  And the color is exactly as everyone says - a nice golden brown - no orange.  Thanks for a wonderful product and for making me feel like I've been in the sun even though I haven't!

Hi Dave,
I've been using your tanners for four years. At first I bought Moisture Tan and then Famous Dave's.
I think the original Moisture Tan was darker on me. The newer one, Famous Dave's, does not appear to darken as well.
Is this correct?
I love your tanner and will continue using it forever.

I love your product.  I've used self tanning products, lotions, creams, & sprays for 8 years and your tanning mist is by far superior to any other self-tanning product on the market. 

 

 

I have to thank you for a wonderful product. Every other self tanner smells strange. This was the first summer in my life that I was able to be on the beach, and look like a normal person. My natural skin color is pure white, and it would take tons of sunning, and tanning salon time to achieve the tan I had in one day with Famous Dave's. Everyone thought I vacationed in Hawaii! Keep making it, we'll keep buying it!

I want you to know that this is the best tanner I have ever used.  I see no reason to try others now that I found Dave's.It's almost mistake proof, perfect color, lasts longer than others I've used and dries in no time.While I don't consider it entirely fragrance free - it's as close and unoffensive as possible.
Thank you for a fantastic product - I wish I'd known about it before spending money on all those other products.
